Overview

The works for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Gruppo FS Italiane) began at the end of 2019, after RFI took over the management of the infrastructure from Umbria TPL e Mobilità, the previous operator of the line, on July 1st of that same year.

The main works on the 5.2 km line involved:

  • Consolidation and widening of the railbed in the Perugia Ponte San Giovanni – Piscille section
  • Complete renovation of the Piscille station with:
    • new height over rail for extending the receptive capacity of the tracks to 100 m
    • new station underpass equipped with elevators/lifts
    • new sidewalks equipped with canopies and tactile paths for the visually impaired
    • restoration of the ACEI-type control system for railway traffic management
  • Consolidation of the railbed in the Piscille – Pallotta section
  • Consolidation of the Pallotta tunnel
  • Entering into service of the Pallotta stop, with widening of the railbed and addition of the odd-numbered track to facilitate train passings
  • Restyling of the Perugia Sant’Anna station with:
    • new sidewalks equipped with canopies and tactile paths;
    • restoration of the ACEI-type control system for railway traffic management
  • Complete preparation and setup for the electrification of the entire Perugia Ponte San Giovanni – Perugia Sant’Anna section, which will be activated at the same time as the electrification of the entire San Sepolcro – Terni line

All the works were completed by RFI and the contractors in less than 3 years: definitely a reduced construction time if we consider the line’s record steep grades – as much as 60 per thousand – which require the use of special machinery and special processing procedures, with longer production times, as well as the pandemic emergency, which greatly influenced the procurement of materials and the smooth, regular carrying out  of operations.

The total investment was 25 million euros funded with resources pursuant to Law 211/92 for the development of public transport in urban areas.
