Project overview
Nairobi is a city of more than 5 million people, where vehicular traffic suffers from heavy congestion at all hours of the day. Its airport, located 20 km from the city center, is the largest in East and Central Africa.
The airport will serve as a hub for many tourist destinations in Africa, as well as accommodate the flow generated by the United Nations (UN) offices that have, in Nairobi, the headquarters for all of East Africa.
The project will expand social and economic opportunities for all residents by introducing modest and efficient equipment and reducing congestion in and around Nairobi.
Once the commuter rail project is completed, it is expected to carry up to 100,000 passengers traveling daily between the international airport and Nairobi's central business district could take as little as 17 minutes at frequencies as large as every 30 minutes.
Services
The activities of Sintagma involved the final and detailed design of the work, which included
The project included 4 key lines through:
- The rehabilitation of about 60 km according to a Light Train Transit (LRT) model,
- the old existing rail system within Nairobi and the construction of new tracks (about 7 km) to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
- The project also involved a new signaling system, rehabilitation of existing stations, construction of 13 new stations and other facilities along the network.
- A second phase of expanding the system to reach the suburbs around the city is also planned, reaching a total network extension of more than 160km.
