Project overview

This is a large and complicated public work to implement urban public service that when completed will transform the existing railway line into a modern subway network.
The project consists of 27 kilometers of railway line of which about 7.5 kilometers are in tunnels. It crosses the entire urban area and runs all the way to Palermo Airport.
Construction work that began in 2008 is now complete for Section A and is nearing completion for Section B with completion scheduled for mid-2016.


Syntagma's activities involved the final and detailed design of the work, which included

  • The modernization of 8 stations;
  • The creation of 10 new stops, 5 of which are underground;
  • Several bridges and decks above;
  • Construction of track works;
  • Tunnels; cuttings;
  • levees;
  • drainage systems;
  • walls.

Technology facilities include a new permanent vibration damping system in tunnels, OHW, LVHV electrical system, signaling, supervision and communication systems, MEP equipment for tunnels and underground stations. All work is being carried out while maintaining railroad operation
