Project overview

The project drawn up by Sintagma offered the ultimate solution to traffic congestion caused by the level crossing on Via Roma, the main access road to the city.

The project was designed to build the tunnel section under the tracks in just 40 days of summer closure of the railway line, thanks to a "Cut and Cover" solution: during the closure, the wall piles and the cover slab were built. Once the railway line reopened regularly, internal excavation was carried out until the section was completely emptied, which was completed last October.

The construction site, which opened in May 2024, advanced expeditiously until Feb. 9, 2025, when the work successfully passed the acceptance tests of the Railway engineers. This concludes the most complex phase of the work: now internal finishing, relocation of underground utilities and paving remain, to be completed by the end of the year, so that the underpass can be opened to traffic ahead of the contractual schedule.
